One of the security risks that many businesses face is unauthorised access. Many businesses pay extra attention while choosing and designing your security system, from monitoring devices to HD video cameras, so they and their team don’t experience any danger or threat. But weakness in this security structure stems from unauthorised access, not directly from a criminal break-in. It could be because of a simple act of kindness or common courtesy amongst the employees, like holding the door. Today in this article, we will discuss some of the most common modes of unauthorised access.

1. Tailgating

The idea of tailgating is when one or more people pass through an authorised user door, an unauthorised visitor follows them. The unauthorised person blends himself into a group and gives the authorised door unnoticed exposing the building to risk.

2. Propping Open Doors

Employees usually prop open the doors for convenience. There are various reasons why employees and others might prop open your building doors as if they are moving and shifting something from one place to another. But while doing this, they don’t realise that they are increasing the risk of unauthorised access.

3. Duplicated Access Cards

People these days usually opt for access control cards instead of traditional keys. If your building has access to control keycards, it is possible that they can be duplicated. But in a more advanced access system, these cards are hard and extremely difficult to duplicate. However, an unauthorised visitor can easily duplicate a keycard and gain access if you have an older access control system.

4. Lost, Stolen, or Loaned Keys

It is definitely a common problem in companies/enterprises/businesses when it comes to key control. If you use keys or keycards to enter your building, there is a possibility of it being lost, stolen, or loaned out. Once a key is lost or stolen, it’s almost impossible to get back. And re-keying locks is time-consuming and very expensive.

5. Levering Doors

It’s often shown in movies that criminals open doors by using a crowbar. Yup that happens in real life too. Many of the time, doors are opened by screwdrivers, crowbars, or many other tools.

How to prevent unauthorised access?

Start from educating your employee and spread awareness of unauthorised access methods, which could result from their ignorance or could be from a kind gesture from them for other people. And, of course, the presence of security officers will deter criminals from any attempt of unauthorised entry to your building out of fear of getting caught.
